Anthony, D. N., & Lucien, B. A. (n.d.). Variation in the exercise of judicial discretion with young offenders (Vol. 34). : Canadian Journal of Criminology.
The article was focusing on a case involving 4 young offenders. 43 judges were involved in the case. Even though the young offenders committed a serious crime the judges had to make their citation based on the Young Offenders Act (YOA). This act has specific rules and warnings when dealing with young offenders. This act allows for a fair trial and for different perspectives to be seen while dealing with cases with young offenders.
I will use more information about the (YOA) because this can help give me more insight and information about actions that can be taken when dealing with young offenders. It can also give me more ideas on how to prevent crime and prevent young offenders from being tried as an adult. This source is relevant because it describes a real case going on with kids and the actions that were involved to help deal with this case. This can allow me to brainstorm more ideas and come up with more evidence. The strengths are its very brief and detailed, there's no extra information. The flaw is it's not specific enough. I wish I knew the whole details about the case to help further my understanding and research.
Claire, B. H., & Sharon, C. (n.d.).
Psychological Maturity of At-Risk Juveniles, Young Adults and Adults: Implications for the Justice System (Vol. 17). : Psychiatry, Psychology & Law.
This article addresses how young teens who do crimes and get tried as adults might not be in the right phycological mindset to handle going to an adult prison. The author talks about how teens/kids might not be criminally capable for their actions if they get tried as adults. To add on, they speak on the maturity and background of the teen because they might be one of the at-risk-young people. They are trying to find ways to prevent young teens from going to adult prison and also seeing where their maturity and mental health is because adult prison might not be the best option for them.
This article can help me with my research because if I can find out the mental state a teen was in when they committed the crime, I can find out if their mentally capable of going to an adult prison and I can also find alternative ways to handle kids who do crimes without sending them to an adult prison. A lot of kids who find themselves doing serious crimes are at-risk-young people who may have been introduced to it during their childhood. Kids who do crimes aren't meant to be sent to adult prison. They are still young, and their brains are still developing. So, reading this article its Enlighted my understanding and I was able to see another perspective on the "why" behind the actions of kids who break the law. This can prevent judges from sentencing kids to adult prison and maybe implement some new laws.
