Scripted Interview; Teens and Adult Prison

My research issue is if it's right for teens who commit crimes to be sent to an adult prison, and ways we can prevent teens from going to adult prisons. I selected the interviewee by locating the nearest precinct and calling their number. I wanted to speak to a police officer because I know they deal with cases that involve kid and teen crime. His enterprise can be used as a primary source in my essay and can further enhance my thesis because he deals with crime almost every day. A police officer is the first to report on a scene of a crime and they interview suspects. So, to have my interviewee see crime firsthand and have all the knowledge about crime is crucial to my research and my ideas.

Question #1; What is your name?

“My name is Dominick De Franko, But you can call me PO De Franko.”

Question #2; What is your profession?

“Uhh I’m a police officer.”

Question #3; What research do you do in your field, if you do any?

“We do research for the NYPD system, We look at people's information and stuff like that. We also do research on the internet. They do open source research.”

Question #4; are there any discoveries you made while in your career?

“They discover witnesses and different video cameras that will show what happened when they go out to respond to a call.

Question #5; Have you gotten any awards?

“I've gotten a few awards. A shooting award for accuracy.”

Question #6; How do you feel about teens who commit crimes and get sentenced as adults?

“As a police officer I can’t really put my feelings into it as much, I just have to go by what the law says and treat everyone fairly based on what the law says.”

Question #7; When it comes to teens who commit crimes, do you have hope that the percentage of teens who commit crimes will decrease?

“Absolutely, Yes I do, for all people, especially teens.”

Question #8; Do you know what the root cause is for teens who commit crimes?

“Scientifically I can’t say. But my experiences usually stem from them having a rough life. Sometimes they do things just to survive or because they're angry. Or just the situation there.”

Question #9; Are there any problems that arise when dealing with kids and teens who commit crimes?

“No, you just want to be fair to them and let them know that this isn’t the end for them, and they still have a bright future ahead of them.”

Question #10; Do you have any solution on how to decrease crimes that are done by kids and teens?

“Society to give them more opportunities and for police to have more interactions with them. Like police having fun with kids instead of just showing up to arrest them.”

Dominick (interviewee): “6A, cruising, P.O. DeFranco, how may I help you?”

Me: “Hi, um, I have a school project to do. I need to interview a police officer or someone in that field and I was wondering if you have time to answer a few questions.”

Dominick: “Absolutely.”

Me: “Do you mind if I record this call?”

Dominick: “No problem at all. What’s your name?”

Me: “Skylah”

Dominick: “Cool”

Me: “I go to John Jay.”

Dominick: “Oh wow, that's great. How old are you?”

Me: “18”

Dominick: “Alright, so what do you got? What kind of questions?”

Me: “The first question is, if you don't mind stating your name.”

Dominick: “Dominick DeFranco. Yeah, PO DeFranco is good.”

Me: “Okay, And the second question is your profession.”

Dominick: “I’m a police officer.”

Me: “Okay, and what research do you do in your field if you do any?”

Dominick: “Yeah. I guess we do research for our NYPD systems. We look up information about people, places, assets, crimes. Then we'll also do research on the internet. This is similar to what you could do yourself. It's called open-source research.”

Me: “Okay, thank you.”

Dominick: “That's it?”

Me: “No there's more. Are there any discoveries that you made while in your career?”

Dominick: “Like with me or with cases.”

Me: “With cases.”

Dominick: “I guess when you have a 911 call you go to the job, and you do a little mini investigation. And then you’ll discover witnesses and different video cameras that will show the perpetrators. And I guess that's considered a discovery.”

Me: “Okay, have you gotten any awards?”

Dominick: ‘“Yeah, I have, not many though. Haven't been on the police force that long. I got a shooting award for accuracy.”

Me: “That’s cool, how do you feel about kids and teens who commit crimes and get sentenced as adults?”

Dominick: “I mean as a police officer I really can’t, you know bring my feelings into it too much. I just have to go by with the law states. That's what we're sworn to do. So, whatever the law says, that's our job to make sure that everyone's treated fairly under that law.”

Me: “So when it comes to teens and kids who commit crimes do you have any hope that the percentage of kids who commit crimes will decrease?”

Dominick: “Absolutely. Yes, I do. For all people, especially teens.”

Me: “Do you know what the root causes of teens and kids who do crimes are?”

Dominick: “Um, scientifically I can't say but just from my experiences, usually it stems from them having a rough life and sometimes they are doing things just to survive, or they have to, they're lashing out because they're angry or just the situation they're in.”

Me: “Are there any problems that arise when dealing with kids and teens who commit crimes?”

Dominick: “Um, I’m trying to think if there's anything specific to them that would be different from let’s just say adults who commit crimes…no I guess you just want to be fair to them and let them know that this isn’t the end for them. They still have a bright future ahead of them and you just want to convey that to them.”

Me: “Okay, and the last question is do you have any solutions on how to decrease the number of crimes that happen by kids and teens?’

Dominick: “Like just for the police or the society in general?”

Me: “Both.”

Dominick: “I guess for society to give them more opportunities. And for the police to have more interactions with them outside of any enforcement, instead of you just arresting them. We do other things like having basketball tournaments, PAL organizations, etc. and making sure they know that the police aren’t there to just punish them or be mean to them. We're just here to help them.”

Me: “Okay, that was all the questions:”

Dominick: “Okay thank you Skylah for the questions and have a great day.’
