Response to Brad Cohen's Literacy Journey

My Response: I really liked this movie; it was very sad but good at the same time. I felt bad that Brad’s family didn’t take him seriously when he said he couldn’t control his tics. I understand that there was no case of Tourette's syndrome, but his family should have taken him more seriously. I felt bad seeing him cry and get sad because he felt like a burden to his family, his classmates, and everyone around him. I love how he grew to express his Tourette's and not let it stop him from doing anything. He kept looking for teaching jobs despite being turned down by each interview he went to. This shows how determined he was to achieve his goal of being a teacher. It broke my heart to see the girl with cancer pass away but it makes my heart melt to know the positive impact Brad had on his students.  Four Different Sentence Structures:  (Simple): Brad was diagnosed with Tourette's syndrome. (Compound): Brad's mom believes Brad isn’t faking his tics, Brad’s dad believes ...

Compare And Contract Frederick Douglass and Malcom X

In both articles some similarities about Federick Douglass and Malcolm X was their access to having an education was stripped away because of them being African American. Racism and segregation were a big thing back then and because Federick and Malcom were both African and not white they weren’t allowed to have an education. As both men grew older, they started to speak out and fight for the rights of African Americans having an education and other rights as well. Education to both men was a blessing that they wanted to experience. Another major similarity between the two men was that they both taught themselves how to read and write. It was a very risky and dangerous move to make but to Federick and Malcolm education meant the world to them, and they weren't going to let anyone, or anything stop them. Difference between Federick and Douglas is that Federick was a slave when he taught himself to read and write. So, teaching himself to read and write was very dangerous and required...

The musty smell floating in the atmosphere, the garbage littering the streets so much that you can’t even see the sidewalk, the dark clouds floating over everybody's head, and the buildings that all look the same. My mom made sure to raise us correctly and specially made sure to raise us up in God. Since I was 10 years old my family and I have been going to church. Our church was called “United Church Unlimited”. The picture on the left is my church. Me and my family hav...

Draft #2 of Literacy Narrative

MY SKILL OF SPREADING THE GOSPEL                If there's anything that my mom taught me, it was to have a good relationship with God. I was raised a Christian . I grew up in the ghetto parts of the Bronx and my family used to go to church every Sunday . I never knew the importance of church. I would sit on the red old long benches and tried not to fall asleep as soon as I heard the pastor speak. I didn’t understand why people got so excited about church, I didn’t understand that people were speaking in tongues and not gibberish. When you're a 10-year-old  child going to church, the only thing you want to  do is wait for it to be over. In elementary and middle school nobody in my class talked about God. It was more of a family thing than a public thing. The only time I mainly talked about God was when I had fights with my sister. When you and your sister have to share a room together it gets crazy. I remember one...

5 Powerful Phrases

1. “Who would've thought that God could love and care for you more than the people he put on this earth with you.” 2. “I feel the lightness in my heart, and it feels like my feet are being gently swept off the floor. This is what being in God's presence feels like.”  3. “God doesn’t give me the spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” 4. “God is a jealous God; he doesn’t want you to put nobody before him. If you love God, why do you only talk to him when you need him.” 5. “God is good all the time, and all the time God is good.”

Freewrite on a Single Skill__Draft #1 of Literacy Narrative

Psalms 91:1 " He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty." was the verse I read before closing my bible. Being in the presence of God is like being surrounded by love. The air feels clearer, the sky looks brighter, you can smell the flowers blooming. I’m proud and confident to say that a skill I “acquired” was being a gospel preacher. I was born into a Christian family. I remember we would go to church every Sunday and I would sit in the not so comfy long old benches. All the grannies and uncles would walk down the aisle to their seats. They would always have one of these white dresses that sort of resemble wedding dresses. The dress I was forced to put on would itch against my skin. When the preacher would preach the only thing, I could understand was the word “GOD!” Everything else to me was boring. It went through one ear and out the other. As you can see, I wasn’t the ...

Diagnostic Essay

The purpose of writing in Forensic Science is to take notes and write observations on their work. For example, when forensic scientists work on active crime scenes they bring a notepad and a pen to write a statement of the description of the crime scene and the evidence they found. They have to take very detailed and accurate notes because oftentimes it will help support their claim when they attend court for murder cases and other cases as well. Writing also helps forensic scientists stay organized on their task and the work they completed. Forensic scientists have strict deadlines and schedules so writing down their tasks and important information helps them to be on top of things and stay organized.                     Another purpose for writing as a forensic scientist is for training and research purposes. When you have newcomers on the job you can use your notes and your notetaking skills to help train them so they can wr...
