Final Reflection

Skylah Nix  12/8/2023 I had a lot of fun and learnt a lot of stuff this semester. In the beginning of the semester, I thought this class would be hard and I was afraid of doing bad and not understanding the work. But with help from the professor the work was easy, and she explained in great detail what we had to do. I enjoyed writing a research paper on a topic that I enjoyed learning about. It made me feel more excited to go to class and it made the material more interesting. I enjoyed watching the small video clips and articles and then having discussions in class. The whole class was engaged on the topic, and everybody was participating.  I learnt a new writing style and I can’t wait to learn more stuff. I thought looking for articles using the John Jay Library would be difficult but thanks to my professor I learnt that it was quite easy to navigate, and it has so many books and articles you can read.

Final Inquiry-Based Research Project (100)

Skylah Nix ENG 101 Section FY20 Prof. Matayakubova Adult Prison with Kids Inside It? How would you react if you saw a young teen in an adult prison like Rikers Island? Would you feel shocked, angry, surprised, or happy? For a long time teens and kids who commit crimes go to facilities and juvenile detention until they get their act together. They were never allowed to go to adult prison. That was until the case of Nathaniel Abraham who in 1999 was the first boy to get sentenced to adult prison for second degree murder. He was only 11 years old when he committed murder was tried as an adult. This case changed the history and sparked controversy on if it's ethical to send kids and teens to adult prison. A large amount of society believes that kids shouldn’t be sentenced to adult prison because they are young, and it sounds inhumane. However, some people believe that kids and teens who commit crimes should go to adult prison because if they do the crime then they serve the time. The...

Skylah Nix  ENG 101, Section FY20  Prof Matayakubova  November 26/2023                                                        Concept-Map, Thesis and Formal Outline  Title: Teens should not be sentenced to adult prison Topic: Teens and Adult Prison  Introduction: What would you do if you saw a 13-year-old in an adult prison? How would that make you feel? In the New York justice system teens who commit serious crimes can be sentenced as adults. Now I know some of you reading this might think that those kids deserve it. If you do the crime, you serve the time, but I think differently.   Thesis: I think that teens who commit crimes shouldn't be sentenced to adult prison. Going to an adult prison that young can badly alter their mind. There should be more programs to help kids who commit...

Responce To Interviews

Skylah Nix  11/6/2023           The strength of the interview is how Raymond Barfield is able to see the joy despite having such a sorrowful job. The interview was very detailed, and he explained his thoughts with care and compassion. He knew what he was talking about, and he was able to connect with Janice Lynch questions. He didn’t get offended at all. The strengths of the interview were overall detailed and thoughtful. One of the questions that I thought was thoughtfully developed was “How do we train doctors, and how can we do better?” I thought this question was thoughtfully developed because when dealing with children who have cancer and have a high chance of death it can be hard for a doctor to deal and cope with that. And especially today we see doctors neglect and abuse patients. So having such an intelligent doctor like Raymond speak his opinion on what can be done to help doctors improve how they deal with patients was really smart. Th...

Scripted Interview

Skylah Nix  ENG 101 FY20  Nargiza Matyakubova  11/19/2023                                                    Scripted Interview; Teens and Adult Prison            My research issue is if it's right for teens who commit crimes to be sent to an adult prison, and ways we can prevent teens from going to adult prisons. I selected the interviewee by locating the nearest precinct and calling their number. I wanted to speak to a police officer because I know they deal with cases that involve kid and teen crime. His enterprise can be used as a primary source in my essay and can further enhance my thesis because he deals with crime almost every day. A police officer is the first to report on a scene of a crime and they interview suspects. So, to have my interviewee see crime firsthand and ...

Annotated Bibliography

Skylah Nix  11/7/2023 Anthony, D. N., & Lucien, B. A. (n.d.). Variation in the exercise of judicial discretion with young offenders (Vol. 34). : Canadian Journal of Criminology.      The article was focusing on a case involving 4 young offenders. 43 judges were involved in the case. Even though the young offenders committed a serious crime the judges had to make their citation based on the Young Offenders Act (YOA). This act has specific rules and warnings when dealing with young offenders. This act allows for a fair trial and for different perspectives to be seen while dealing with cases with young offenders.      I will use more information about the (YOA) because this can help give me more insight and information about actions that can be taken when dealing with young offenders. It can also give me more ideas on how to prevent crime and prevent young offenders from being tried as an adult. This source is relevant because it describes a rea...

Chasing The Dragon

Skylah Nix  10/11/2023       The theme that I’m focusing on is “opiate addictions can occur quickly” because people can take medication for a totally different reason and become addicted to it before they know it. It's something that happens quickly before anybody can process what's happening. In the documentary it states, “Most first-time abusers of painkillers obtain them from a friend or relative.” (the most addictive drug). This shows how easy it is to become addicted before you can easily access it from friends or family, and you wouldn’t think anything of it. It's only when you have the temptation to try the drugs again that you realize it's a problem. Another example is Sarah who started to become addicted to opiates after taking them when she got into an automobile accident. (Discussion Guide).      Another theme that I chose is “Common Death”. Sadly, when it comes to drug addictions, also comes a lot of death. An example is Katrina ...

Research Proposal

Skylah Nix ENG 101  - FY20  Narigza Matayakubova       Imagine visiting a prison like Rikers Island and seeing a 16-year-old kid in there! What would you do? The decision to try a teen as an adult is usually decided by a judge or by a prosecutor. Kids and teens will be sentenced as an adult if they commit serious violent crimes like assault or murder. However, there has been great controversy on whether or not it's ethical to sentence a kid to an adult prison regardless of the crime. If a kid kills somebody, there is a question on if the child should be sentenced based on the crime or if the child should be sentenced based on the age. This leads me to think if it's ethical to sentence children as adults if they commit serious crimes.       I watch a great amount of crime documentaries on the daily and a lot of them that I watch deal with children committing serious violent offenses like assaulting other kids and adults and even mur...
